This film will inevitably be compared to The Sixth Sense, as there are so many similarities. This however would be unjust, as it is a screen conversion of Richard Matheson's 1958 novel, Stir of Echoes.
Written and directed by David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible), it is a story of how Tom (Kevin Bacon) develops supernatural powers after being hynotized by his wife's sister Lisa (Illeana Douglass). Tom's son Jake (Zachary David Cope) already has the ability to converse with the dead, and talks to a ghost regularly. When Tom starts seeing visions, and then a ghost, he is convinced it is trying to tell him something. Tom decides to throw himself into finding out what the ghost wants, much to the distress of his wife Maggie (Kathryn Erbe). The scene is then set for a sound thriller, with plenty of twists and ghostly antics.
Stir of echoes is a well made film, with a good cast, and an equally good plot. In my opinion it is superior to The Sixth Sense and a shame it was not released earlier. It will have you at the edge of your seat, and hating that spheroid sat behind you, eating 74 packets of crisps.

Stir of echoes starring Kevin Bacon, is based on the novel by Richard Matheson. Kevin, who plays Tom Witzky is a normal everyday guy with a wife, kid and a job. He goes to a party one night and his wife's best friend dares him to be hypnotized .After a bit of encouragement Tom decides to let her hypnotize him. As soon as he returns home he starts to have visions and these visions are the clues to a murder which has happened in his house done by his friends in a small town in Chicago.
As the story develops, he starts to piece the mystery together, the killers become more aware and plot to kill him. He manages to master these visions showing him exactly what part they played in the murder. He finally finds the dead body thats in his house and is able to save himself.
Stir of echoes is a very basic film indeed and very little action involved, but saying that I thought it was a pretty interesting film, enjoyable and would say its worth watching again.
