For the casual fan however the once in every 2 years experiece beckons. Paint yourself in red/white & blue, talk bollocks about something you know little about and get pissed cheering for England.

Euro 2000 beckons in the Low Countries and England scraped here via the playoffs (despite the embarrassing defeat to Scotland). The odds on doing well should not be too high however as despite the anticipated hype by spring time we are not that good.

Seaman looks increasingly dodgy in goal, there is no width on the left besides Le Saux , who rarely finds a man (except with a punch), The midfield lacks real creativity and the forwards are not too hot.. Shearer was godlike during Euro 96 but his pace has gone whilst Owen is never fit or really convincing despite his dramatic introduction to World football.

Saying all this have we ever been the finished article for decades. Every side has had weaknesses yet come the time of a tournament we always seem to get to a semi-final shoot out with the krauts. The difference this time is that we play Germany in the initial group stage. We must win to get through! A qualifying group of Germany, Bulgaria and Portugal looks quite hard but let’s hope they can do us proud again. Expect many packed pubs during June and hopefully some success.

AS an after thought the old chestnut. Is Hull a Rugby Town or Football City? The amount of people watching football may just show which sport attracts the most interest. It’s just a pity City are doing so badly!
