The Porthole is an easy way to use the internet. Our team has ploughed through thousands of pages of recommended sites to bring together the best, all in one place. Many people new to the internet get frustrated at never finding what they want. Even experienced users can waste time on search engines getting to a site they have heard of but have no address for. We aim to provide comprehensive lists with regular updates, which will be at least a springboard to where you want to go.
We are also launching a comprehensive "walkabout" of Hull. Starting from the city centre and spreading out month by month we have photographed and linked a huge number of streets and roads, aiming eventually to cover every street for a virtual walk through of the city. At major sites or locations links will be available to web sites. For instance, at Princes Quay and Prospect Centre we expect to have a page or entire site for every business inside. At community centres we want to put up detailed activities lists and possible photographic / audio or video reports. Buildings such as museums we expect to be able to walk through, etc.
At the same time we will also be generating free content for the community on all kinds of activities, events, sports and charity work. This will be placed with equal prominence to world sites, so that the people using The Porthole see the diversity of the area. It's a kind of 'promoting Hull' thing! As the community has no one to serve it online we will aim to fill that gap, using placements from the voluntary sector of new deal. The placements get experience of all kinds from web site creation to new style journalism and digital imaging.
